PVSC Caribou Bog Ski Race and Kids' Tour

Great Caribou Bog

Wicked Winter Ski Tour and Race

Course Instructions

Directions: Essex Woods is at the top of the sliding hill that you can see from the Interstate. Get off Exit 48 and head toward Bangor on Broadway. Left onto Stillwater Ave. Left again (first light) onto Essex St. Out Essex St. and over the Interstate bridge. Essex Woods sign is up the hill on your right (just before the Methodist Church)

Parking: Park in the Essex Woods parking place (behind the Methodist Church on outer Essex St, just past the interstate)..

Start: Racers and Tourers will start promptly at 1:00 p.m. Please self-seed; faster skiers in front, slower in rear to avoid collisions at the start.

Course: Our trail crew, Chris Dorion, Gil Roderick, Jim Allen and Bruce Leavitt has worked extremely hard, but be cautious for rough spots and rocks. While most of the trail is wide enough for passing, there are several tight spots. Watch for our fluorescent orange signs and ribbons with arrows. Red pin flags mark turns; like a guardrail, they guide you around the turn. Do not ski through them. Water is available in the City Forest.

Classical: This year's event is classical style.

Safety: Communication on the trail is provided by the Pine State Amateur Radio Club. If a fellow skier is injured or incapacitated please stop, render assistance, and send word ahead for help, including the name of the injured party and the nature of the injuries. Stay with the injured party until help arrives. If for any reason you do not complete the course, please notify us so we do not initiate a needless search.

Finish. The finish is at Essex Woods at the top of the hill. Sorry, but you're going to have to get up the hill one way or another and you may as well get it over with.

Children's Tour: The Caribou Bog Children's Tour for kids twelve and younger will start at about 1:30 p.m. at Essex Woods. Course length will be age-appropriate. There is no entry fee for the short loop course and entrants must register with a guardian. Parents and guardians are encouraged to assist, encourage, and ski along. Thanks to Anders Netland for special financial support.

Awards: Please stay for the awards! Awards will be presented as soon as the results for each class are known and gift certificates Epic Sports will be given. Results will be emailed and posted to the pvskiclub website following the race.
